Guide and FAQ

What your numbers mean

Download speed matters most for browsing, streaming and downloading games. Upload speed matters for video calls, sending photos and videos, and live streaming. Ping is the time a signal takes to reach the server and come back, and the lower it is, the better for gaming and calls. Jitter is how much your ping changes from moment to moment, and high jitter makes call audio break up.

How much speed do you need?

Suggested speeds for one device
Use	Download speed
Browsing and email	5 Mbps
HD video calls	10 Mbps
HD streaming	10 Mbps
4K streaming	25 Mbps
Online gaming	10 Mbps and ping under 50 ms

If several devices are in use at the same time, add up what each one needs.

How long does a 110 GB game like GTA V take to download?

Downloading 110 GB by line speed
Download speed	Approximate time
10 Mbps	1 day
30 Mbps	8 hr 9 min
50 Mbps	4 hr 53 min
100 Mbps	2 hr 27 min
200 Mbps	1 hr 13 min
500 Mbps	29 min

How long does it take to upload a 1 GB video?

Uploading 1 GB by upload speed
Upload speed	Approximate time
2 Mbps	1 hr 7 min
5 Mbps	27 min
10 Mbps	13 min
20 Mbps	7 min
50 Mbps	3 min
100 Mbps	1 min

On most home plans, upload speed is much lower than download speed, so uploading a video takes longer than downloading it.

Megabits or megabytes?

Internet speed is measured in megabits per second, while file sizes are measured in megabytes and gigabytes. One byte is 8 bits, so divide your speed by 8 to see how many megabytes you download per second. A 100 Mbps line downloads about 12.5 MB per second at best.

Why do my results differ between tests?

Each site measures to a different server, so results vary a little. Your result also depends on Wi‑Fi versus cable, your distance from the router, how many devices are connected, and the time of day, as speeds usually drop during evening peak hours.

Frequently asked questions

Is the speed test free?

Yes, it's completely free with no sign-up, and no ads appear during the test itself.

How much data does the test use?

Yes, but only a little. The test stops as soon as the reading is steady, so it usually uses less than 50 MB, and we show you the actual usage after every test. The optional extended test uses more.

What's the difference between download and upload speed?

Download is how fast data reaches you, like streaming a video or downloading a game. Upload is how fast you send data, like posting a video or making a video call.

Do you store my data?

We store test results anonymously with the provider name and approximate city to publish network performance reports. We don't store your IP address.
